Artist Statement

In my paintings I explore texture and color. I also love the contrast of light and dark. I love being outside, so I also enjoy painting landscapes. Many of my landscapes are created from my memory and imagination. I think some of my better work is created when I revisit something that I painted and then was not satisfied with. When I revisit these pieces they speak to me and I know where to go next. Obviously I like bright bold colors, but some of my work is quieter. Sometimes I begin with an idea, and see where it takes me on the paper or canvas. Creating art is one of my greatest joys, and sometimes one of my greatest frustrations.

Artist Biography

I was born and reared on Long Beach, California. In 1967 I moved to Berkeley and worked for a while before returning to college to earn a teaching credential there. I moved to the East Bay and taught special education and regular education for twenty years, as well as reared my family.

After moving to Sacramento in 2000 I retired, I have had the great joy of pursuing my lifelong interest art. When I was working sketched and occasionally painted. The last few years I have focused on learning to paint. When I was teaching, I taught as much art as I could fit into the curriculum. I learned a lot from teaching art and observing the children create.

My hope and plan is to pursue this interest in art for the rest of my life. This pursuit offers my joy, challenge, and serendipity. I try to create beauty and wonder in my paintings. Another interest of mine is travel, and I hope to see as much of the world as I can. My sketchbook is my best friend on these trips.
