Remembrance by David Peterson
It depicts the La Sierra High School Vietnam Memorial for students who
did not come home from the Vietnam War. This Memorial is located in the
Koobs Nature Area adjacent to the La Sierra Community Center. This is a
plein air painting from the spring of 2019.

In this painting, I used Daniel Smith’s Watercolor Ground in spots to add an impasto-like texture to the paper, then painted with transparent watercolor. Since the watercolor is on top of the ground, this would be considered OK for contest, but I would have explain it to the judges, so rather than explaining it, I just call it “mixed media.” I also used negative painting and reverse painting using a custom made stencil to pull out some of the shapes in the background.
