JUROR OF AWARDS
Dan Petersen AWS, NWS
Artist/Teacher/Painter of Watercolor Landscapes
Dan Petersen is a name synonymous with watercolor landscapes in Central California. After completing graduate work in his chosen medium at San Jose State University, he returned to the valley to teach. He has been a favorite instructor of drawing and watercolor at Modesto Junior College for over 35 years. Scores of art educators on every level, professional and “Sunday painters,” as well as illustrators and designers of every stripe have studied with Dan. These artists all began their love affair with art while observing the cube in one of Petersen’s classes. With his inspiration, watercolor is the personal medium of choice for many collectors in this part of the state.
Dan emphasizes the quality of transparency in his paintings, which is a distinctive feature of watercolor. He employs many overlays or glazes to bring color harmony to the objects he paints. In addition, he attempts to incorporate subtle cubistic devices designed to help tie up the many unrelated parts into a unified and pleasing whole. His distinctive style achieves freshness with control by suing multiple layers of liquid masking to define the details in his subject.
Dan Petersen received a Master of Arts degree in watercolor from San Jose State University in 1962. Following graduation, he began teaching art on the high school level in Manteca, California. In 1963, Dan accepted a position as watercolor instructor at Modesto Junior College and thus began a 40-year career teaching watercolor and drawing at the college level.
Among his many achievements are:
• Signature member of American Watercolor Society and National Watercolor Association
• Participation in countless competitive shows, exceeding 150 awards, 25 Best of Show, 40 First Place and over 30 Special Recognition Awards.
• Over 50 one man shows and numerous group exhibits
• Top statewide awards at the California State Fair and in Northern California. He has additionally earned several top national watercolor awards.
Dan is a popular lecturer and judge for art groups throughout California.
